Pit Bull Puppy the Victim of At-Home Ear Cropping

SACRAMENTO-

Coco, a three-month-old Pit Bull, still has his stitches but the scars from what happened to him Oct. 22 are what really cut deep.

“Imagine me taking a pair of gardening sheers to your ears and lopping them right off without anesthesia, proper follow up, suturing, pain medication, antibiotics,” said City of Sacramento Animal Services’ Gina Knepp.

A licensed vet is the only person who is allowed to crop a dog’s ears. The cost runs between $200 and $400.

Other than the aesthetic, a reason one may chop a dog’s ears off would be for dog fighting.

“If they don’t have ears, like Coco now, (who is) pretty earless, they don’t bleed as much during the fights,” said Knepp.

The puppy, traumatized by what happened to him, is now at a foster home and is getting ready for adoption.

“He’s actually coming out of his shell quite a bit, having only been out of the shelter for less than one day,” said Dawn Capp, with Chako Pit Bull Rescue.

The District Attorney’s office is now prosecuting Coco’s owner. If found guilty, the owner could face a maximum of one year behind bars.

I saw this on tv. It really sucks that people would home crop their pets ears; but did you guys have to relate it to dog fighting. As if the dogs reputation isn’t tarnish already. Nice way to kick a dog while its down.

This makes me sick. A year maximum in jail is not enough time. That is a slap on the wrist compared to what this poor puppy suffered. I don’t agree with ear cropping to befin with, but this is just pure evil. That man defines why hanging should still be in our justice system. I have two pitt bulls and they are fine the way they are. Also, anyone who particiates in dog fighting should be hung with this man.

One year is not enough of a punishment for this crime, if you ask me!! What if someone did this to a child?? How long would they get then? Animals are just as helpless when it comes to horrible owners…. I say the law should reflect the punishment as if this had been done to a child, and not "just" an animal…..

Chako does amazing things for pits. We are currently fostering one of their dogs. He is a great puppy. Anyone interested in adopting one of Chako’s amazing dogs can email adoptions@chako.org or adoptions2@chako.org. Both of the adoption coordinators are great and will be able to answer any questions you may have before you fill out an adoption application, which you can find at chako.org. You can also find out how to become a foster for Chako if you would like to help save a dog’s life.

THIS IS IGNORANT. EAR CROPPING HAS ABSOLUTELY NOTHING TO DO WITH DOG FIGHTING ANYMORE!!!! IT IS ONLY AESTHETIC! NOTHING FURTHER!!!! JUST DUMB.

Really? I am amazed by this comment and the ignorance behind it.

The person that did that needs to have a dull pair of sciccors cut off his ears. Eye for an Eye. Karma.
