The Modesto Police Department say they’re getting “conflicting information” about the Sunday afternoon shooting of an 18-month-old child.
Monday, officers arrested Maria Hernandez, the child’s grandmother, on endangerment charges.
“She has no other information, no other explanation on how the granddaughter ended up getting shot,” Modesto Police Lt. Rick Armendariz said Monday.
Police say they’re not entirely certain where the shooting happened, but know that it wasn’t from a drive-by. Neighbors and witnesses say the drive-by never happened.
Detectives are investigating the shooting as a cover up, and say there may be more charges brought in the case.
“We don’t understand why. Obviously, the family is more concerned about protecting whoever it was that committed this, as compared to focusing on the one and a half year old child,” Armendariz told FOX40.
Investigators are still searching for the gun that reportedly injured the little girl.
