Large flames burst from a 14-unit Carmichael apartment complex early Tuesday morning and sent one elderly man to the hospital in critical condition.

The building is on Castle Hill Court near the El Camino and Fulton Avenue intersection.

The two-alarm fire is believed to have started in the attic and spread quickly across many upper-level units.

Residents scrambled once they knew what was happening. One passerby said, “People were running down the street, crying about how their homes were on fire and they were losing everything.”

It’s unclear how the fire started.

As a resident of the apartments that went up in flame, I do not believe it started in the attic. There were crackling/ gun shot sounds that a couple neoghbors n I feel was caused by the stove. I hope they find out what was really going on in there. The resident was already in a depressive state, so who knows? Maybe he caused it on purpose? There are a few speculations as to what actually caused n started it all. A suicide attempt? An accident? No one really knows! And hope they get to the bottom of this. God bless my neighbor
