A man who Sacramento’s District Attorney says terrorized ten victims more than ten years ago in Sacramento County, is now in custody.
The so-called “roaming rapist” was identified during a Friday morning press conference as Dereck Sanders. Investigators say he had at least ten victims between 1998 and 2002, ranging in age from 14 to 42.
Detectives say the “roaming rapist’s” DNA was identified with help from Sanders’ brother, who is also a rapist.
His brother was arrested in December 2011 for a felony, and his DNA was collected and entered into the state’s database. The similarities then led investigators to Sanders from evidence taken during the sexual attacks.
Although investigators know about the ten attacks, they believe there are other victims of Sanders. Anyone who has information about Sanders or other possible attacks, please contact the Sacramento County Sheriff’s sex assaults bureau (916) 874-5070.
Sanders is facing a life sentence if convicted.
