Police Dog Sniffs Out Stockton Schools for Contrband

STOCKTON-

Four-year-old canine, Gordon, sniffed out some firecrackers his handler, Debi DeShon, hid in our FOX40 live truck.

“He finds gun powder-based products,” DeShon said.

That’s a good thing. Just since last month, at least three students have brought handguns to school.

“We did have two kids in middle school, who brought a gun, handed it to the other and the second child, when he went to put it in the pocket of his pants, the gun discharged,” Stockton Unified School District Police Chief Jim West said.

Police also arrested a 14-year-old boy, who brought a 9 mm handgun on campus, in a separate incident.

“We were just very fortunate that no one was hurt,” the chief said.

And because of those incidents, within the past couple of weeks, the district has Gordon making rounds to the 50-plus schools, including K-8, high schools and adult schools as well.

“We’ve had a dog in the school district everyday,” West said. “Everyday, random basis. We don’t even tell the principal or the teachers. We just show up.”

Gordon is characterized as a “contraband dog.”

“He finds illegal drugs. He finds drinking alcohol,” DeShon said, as Gordon zeroed in on a small bottle of vodka she had hidden in a wheel well of a car. Gordon sits next to his find to alert his partner.

“And that’s how he tells us he smells something,” she said.

“Our goal is to find absolutely nothing,” the chief said. “It’s all about keeping these things away from our kids, away from our campuses and keeping everybody safe.”
