SACRAMENTO –

You’ve heard of a run on banks. This was a run on bakeries.

“I got 5 loaves of bread, Zingers and Fig Newtons,” listed one shopper who loaded up on all his favorites at the Hostess factory store.

At 2p.m. Thursday, Hostess had said it was going to do a head-count. If enough strikers hadn’t crossed the picket lines to work, the baked-goods giant said it was going to liquidate.

“I’m not nervous, just anxious,” said one striker who did not want to be identified.

But 2 p.m. came and went, and the corporation’s Sacramento bakery was still churning-out buns.

“My family and I have been planning on this for 18 months. If they close, I’ll find another job,” the striker said.

Late Thursday, the a spokesman for Hostess said they were still evaluating, and if they do close it wouldn’t be until Nov. 20 or so.
