MODESTO – At CrossFit Modesto Krav Maga, soldiers are being made.
Some of the exercises are squats, push-ups, and sit ups which are meant to give the recruits endurance and strength, according to CrossFit coach Erika Bucheli.
For the last year and a half the gym has offered a Future Soldier Class to any recruit at no charge. The goal of the class is to get the recruits physically ready for boot camp.
One of those recruits is Erica Mann who signed up for the class in June and leaves for basic training on January 1.
Mann said the class works, “I’m able to go hard longer. I’m catching up with the guys so that says a lot.”
According to Bucheli, there are lots of class success stories. “The girls and guys who come back (from basic training) always say boot camp was a lot easier than what they had to do here.”
While it may sound hard to believe US Army recruiter Sgt. Rosen, who has been through boot camp, can back up Bucheli’s claim. “This training is actually more physically intense than what they will go through in basic,” he said.
The class is great for recruits but there’s another reason the gym wanted to make it available. “We’re a very patriotic family,” said Bucheli, “We want to serve our community by helping those who serve our country and keep us free.”
With recruitment numbers down nationwide because of obesity and not volunteers not being able to meet physical demands this class can have an impact.
The Future Soldier Class takes place on Tuesdays at 3:00pm and is free to all recruits. CrossFit Modesto is located at 4213 McHenry Ave., Modesto.
