Atmospheric rivers are also known by another name: “Pineapple Express.”
The term makes a lot of sense – since this is what happens when a storm hitting California taps into the atmosphere over Hawaii, where there is much more moisture in the atmosphere.
The “atmospheric river” then transports that extra rain straight up to California.

A drenching four days of rain is expected to bring localized flooding around the Sacramento area, and Central Valley. It’s being called an “atmospheric river” by the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration.
