Atmospheric rivers are also known by another name: “Pineapple Express.”
The term makes a lot of sense – since this is what happens when a storm hitting California taps into the atmosphere over Hawaii, where there is much more moisture in the atmosphere.
The “atmospheric river” then transports that extra rain straight up to California.
