Cynthia Rangel loves signing “If You’re Happy and You Know It” to her baby girl Angelina.

But there’ll be no clapping of hands for the 2-year-old for awhile.

Still, it’s a dream her parents have held in their hearts since June 3, when doctors told them their once vibrant baby girl wouldn’t smile or know them.

That was the prognosis for Angelina after a fateful fall into her backyard pool.

“It was hard,” her father, Joel Rangel, said through tears.

“I thought I lost her,” said Cynthia Rangel.

Elated that their baby was still alive, they were crushed when doctors encouraged them to let her pass.

“Them telling us to donate her organs and all this stuff. That’s hard to swallow,” said Joel.

Despair turned to determination when Angelina gave them signs she was fighting to regain parts of herself like breathing on her own. To leave the hospital, doctors had to insert a tracheostomy.

“We just walked in faith,” said Cynthia.

That’s when the Rangels wrangled the system, committing to home care and hyperbaric therapy they learned about through a support group for families dealing with brain injuries caused by oxygen deprivation.

For them, it’s brought progress doctors said wasn’t possible.

“We’re getting miracles everyday; Smiling, looking around,” said Cynthia.

The recommended treatment costs about $6,000 – something they can’t pay and their Health Net insurance won’t cover.

That’s why they’re asking anyone with a cell phone to text ‘WISH’ to 80077 starting at 12 a.m., Dec. 20 and make a $5 donation.

The drive ends at 11:59 p.m. Dec. 20.

“It’s a slow process, but it’s worth the wait.  And I believe the doctors were wrong on this one,” said Joel.

If texting isn’t your thing, there are other ways to help.

You can also make a donation in person at any Chase bank. Just ask the teller about the “Angelina Rangel Fund”, 3022038524 is the account number.
