Seasonal Sneak: Black Ice

It’s inevitable that parts of Highway 50 freeze over with black ice, especially since the sun doesn’t touch parts of the road for months.

On Interstate 5 near the Oregon border, black ice is said to be the culprit behind a 60-car crash. No one was injured in the accident, which had a scene that stretched for two miles.

Caltrans’ answer to the seasonal sneak is to “think pink” — a mixture of sand, salt and ice slicer that’s pinkish in color. The ratio changes, depending on the temperature.
