The Sacramento Metropolitan Fire District is the recipient of a $5.6 million federal grant, Rep. Doris Matsui announced Friday.
The grant, which comes from FEMA and a Department of Homeland security program, will be used to hire 24 fire fighters.
The Dept. of Homeland Security’s Staffing for Adequate Fire and Emergency Response (SAFER) awards the grant annually, through FEMA. In 2011, the fire department was awarded $5.4 million.
Matsui (D-CA 5), in a statement to the press, said in a statement that the grant is an example of the federal government’s commitment to public safety.
“Our fire departments are too important to be left under-staffed,” Matsui added.
