Deputy Chief Dan Schiele (Sacramento Police Department)

Sacramento City Manager John Shirey announced Monday that an acting police chief has been appointed for current Chief Rick Braziel, who is retiring at the end of the year.

Deputy Chief Dan Schiele will step in as chief Dec. 29.

Braziel announced plans to retire Nov. 14 after 33 years with the Sacramento Police Department. He was once named a top candidate to be Seattle’s police chief before he withdrew his name from consideration.

Schiele has been with Sacramento Police for 31 years, including five years as commander of the Joseph E. Rooney Police Facility. He hasn’t applied for the permanent position of police chief, a release from the police department said.
