Some travelers looking to ring in the new year away from home are already hitting the highways.

Leaving Sacramento toward the Bay Area was not too bad, although there was some congestion on the Causeway. But for travelers heading east, it was bumper to bumper in some areas.

“Yesterday and today. I work down in Emeryville so it has been pretty bad going from Cordelia back here,” said Carolyn Gomes

Gomes is heading to Long Beach for new year, but rather than deal with the hassle on the highway she is traveling by plane.

AAA expects more than 93 million Americans will travel this holiday season — that is up nearly 2% from last year.

While many are gearing up to break out the noise makers and party hats, others are keeping it low key.

“Too much congestion. Too many people drinking and driving. It’s not worth the risk anymore,” said Cody Wilkerson.
