Authorities had to evacuate a Stockton apartment complex off Pershing Avenue after a van crashed into gas main Tuesday morning, officials say.

The driver of the van was not at the scene by the time authorities arrived, with the crash happening a little before 6:30 a.m.

A total of 18 apartment units had to be evacuated. The van was said to be sitting in on the main, which complicated matters. Plus, crews had a hard time finding a line from where to shut the gas off, with maps being wrong.

Concerns over a possible explosion have kept authorities from moving the van until PG&E crews could show up and turn off the gas.
