Police say that two people are dead and three other people are injured after Monday night’s shooting in Old Sacramento — with a 22-year-old suspect reportedly in custody.
According to information released Tuesday, the shooting happened around 9:30 p.m. on New Year’s Eve. Investigators say the shooting stemmed from a fight inside the Sports Corner bar on K Street. The fight spilled out onto the street, where the shooting happened.
Both a 35-year-old man and an employee of the bar died at the scene. A 30-year-old woman and an armed security guard were also hit, but only suffered non-life threatening injuries.
The security guard apparently shot back at the gunman, with both the suspect and guard hit during the exchange. No one else was reportedly injured in the shooting.
Police say that the gunman tried run into the crowded streets gathered for New Year’s celebrations, but he was immediately apprehended by an officer. He is in police custody as he is being treated at a local hospital. His identity is not being released at this time.
The midnight display was canceled by police because of the shooting investigation. Two guns of unspecified make and model are said to have been found at the scene, with authorities still investigating the incident.
Around 8 a.m. Tuesday, officials detonated the fireworks that were scheduled to go off at midnight due to the danger of keeping live explosives.
