For Dennis Larsen, it made no sense.
He knew his neighbor was home because her car was in the driveway, but when he and others broke a window to get into her burning home, she was no where to be found.
“We had to get out of there, the fire was closing in,” said Larsen.
But, just moments later, the woman, who Larsen says is named Arlene, literally walked out from the smoke.
“I was like ‘where were you?’ ” Larsen asked his neighbor.
“I was asleep in the front room,” the woman told him.
The fire that started on the back porch of the home on Edison Avenue in the Arden-Arcade area moved to the inside before fire crews could get there; but once on scene, they put it out quickly.
A fire captain with the Sac Metro Fire originally thought the woman was able to get out because of her smoke alarm.
Apparently that wasn’t the case, as the woman admitted it was all the screaming that woke her from her slumber, and not a moment too soon.
