A security company in Ripon has been trying to rip off potential customers by lying to them, police say.

According to police, the company has been knocking on people’s doors and making up horrendous crimes that allegedly happened in people’s neighborhood – trying to scare people into buying security systems.

“We do want people to be aware of the fact that sometimes companies may use scare tactics in order to sell their product,” said Sgt. Steve Merchant, with Ripon Police Department.

The company also told people about a “new ordinance” that required them to upgrade their security systems.

“That is not true; we do not have an ordinance that speaks to the age of someone’s alarm. We just want their alarm to work,” said Merchant.

When police confronted the company about it, this time they didn’t lie.

“Then they admitted they weren’t sure or not they were just using that as kind of a tactic to sell alarms,” said Merchant.

Police are not identifying the company that did this, and ask people that think they are being taken advantage of to call authorities.
