A South Lake Tahoe Police officer was arrested Wednesday on charges of witness tampering, according to police.

Officer John Poland was taken into custody after a three-year investigation.

Poland, 44, is accused of convincing someone to destroy evidence that was to be used in an official proceeding, and trying to get people to change their testimony.

Prosecutors also say Poland tried to convince witnesses to hold information and evidence, which impeded investigations.

Poland faces other allegations of misconduct. Investigators say he gave gang members sensitive law enforcement information and had sexual contact with minors. This lasted over several years, even when Poland was a school resource officer at South Tahoe High School, detectives say.
