It’s 6 a.m., dark outside and 35 students run onto Toomey Field at UC Davis.
They are ROTC cadets: Reserve Officers in Training Corps, and physical training is just beginning. These cadets will spend the next hour or so running, doing push ups, and lunges. All this before school starts.
Tiffany Sun is an ROTC cadet and says she decided to participate in the program her senior year of high school. She says has no regrets and she is proud to be preparing to be an officer.
The Army ROTC is the largest officer producing organization within the military, and has produced some fairly notable people in different walks of life; including U.S. Secretary of Defense Leon Panetta and actor James Earl Jones.
The program is also very competitive with hefty scholarships on the line. The students in the UC Davis battalion have an uncertain future to face, but cadets like Tiffany say they are prepared.
