2nd Generation Officer Named New Sacramento Police Chief
A deputy chief who has served 28 years with Sacramento Police will now head the department.
Sam Somers was named the new Sacramento Police Department Police Chief Wednesday.
“I was humbled that he would pick me among my peers,” said Chief Somers of City Manager John Shirey’s selection.
He is a second generation officer, his father served on the Sacramento force, retiring as a captain.
Chief Somers said he is excited to be the 44th police chief of Sacramento, especially he said, at a time of rebuilding. He referenced Measure U, which passed in Sacramento last Fall and would provide funds to the department through a half-cent sales tax.
He said the department would rebuild “smarter and faster” and look at strategies to control and reduce crime.
