The company that owns and operates the red light cameras in Sacramento County is in some hot water.
Redflex allegedly had a few associates giving lavish gifts to a Chicago city leader to get a contract extension for their red light cameras. That same company works with Sacramento County, so Sgt. Jason Ramos of the Sacramento County Sheriff’s Department says they are asking tough questions.
“We are going to monitor it and keep ourselves apprised of the developments. At this point, it’s not enough to make us reconsider the arrangements we have with the company,” said Ramos.
Currently, Sacramento County has 24 intersection approaches monitored by Redflex, and they are in the process of adding more.
“We are committed to the red light camera program, whether its reflex or whether its someone else in the future it’s something that’s likely going to continue,” said Ramos.
Ramos says intersections with red light cameras have seen a drastic reduction in accidents, even the intersections without cameras are safer, because people are afraid of getting the pricey ticket.
