Gang Member Leads Authorities on 30 Mile Chase
A known gang member led authorities on a chase from Vacaville to North Sacramento before crashing and being caught Friday afternoon.
The incident started after an undercover officer saw what he believed was a drug deal near North Texas Street and Dickson Hill Drive around 3:30 p.m. People in two cars looked to be making the transaction, but the detective started following just one of the cars.
Soon, the car drove onto eastbound I-80 and began zigzagging, forcing the officer to call in backup to try and pull the car over.
Authorities soon identified the driver of the car as Sureno gang member Fernando Portal.
Portal crossed Solano, Yolo and then finally Sacramento County during the pursuit. He eventually tried exiting on Northgate Boulevard in North Sacramento, only to drive into oncoming traffic and hit another car head-on.
Portal tried to run, but thanks to an aircraft also in on the chase, authorities were able to easily track him. He was soon taken into custody and taken back to Vacaville.
At the same time of the pursuit, witnesses at the I-80 onramp in Vacaville called police to report that Portal had thrown some items from his car. Authorities soon found a plastic bag with more than two ounces of meth.
After being looked at for any injuries, Portal was arrested and booked into Solano County Jail on multiple charges stemming from the pursuit.
The driver and a passenger that Portal crashed into had to be taken to the hospital, with the driver having a “substantial” leg injury.
