Could Sacramento be hosting the 2024 Summer Olympic Games? Well, not by ourselves, says Mike Testa with the Sacramento Convention and Visitors Bureau.

“No, Sacramento cannot host the Olympics by ourselves. But we could tag on to a bid with San Francisco just as we looked to do with Lake Tahoe in the Winter Olympic Games,” Testa says.

But, the U.S. Olympic Committee sent letters to 35 cities Tuesday, trying to get a feel for which cities would be interested in an Olympic bid.

Sacramento got one of the letters, along with other Northern California cities like San Francisco and San Jose.

While it may not be realistic for Sacramento to host an Olympic games on our own, that doesn’t mean we wouldn’t get a taste of the competition – if a city nearby, like San Francisco, got the bid.

“San Francisco isn’t big enough to host the Olympics by themselves either. So they would need a city like Sacramento and some of our facilities,” Testa said.
