Santa Cruz Police Officers, Suspect Shot Dead

(CNN) — Two officers with the Santa Cruz Police Department in California were fatally shot Tuesday, as was the lone suspect, Santa Cruz County Sheriff Phil Wowak told reporters.

The incident began at about 3:30 p.m. PT, the sheriff’s office said in a statement.

“During the course of (an) investigation, two Santa Cruz police officers were fatally shot,” it said.

A number of law enforcement agencies responded to the shootings. “The suspect was located shortly after the initial shooting and is deceased.”

Authorities had released no identities Tuesday evening.
