Second Man Claims Jeweler Won’t Honor Return Policy
Two different men and two different rings.
But there’s one thing Ping Wong of Rocklin and Adam Van Weelden of Rancho Cordova have in common– they both bought a diamond ring for the love of their life from Samuels Diamonds.
The company has a 30-day money back guarantee policy on its website, but both customers say when they tried to return the ring, the store wouldn’t let them.
“I came back eight hours later to get my money back,” Wong said.
“For me, it was about a week. They wouldn’t refund my money after seven days,” Van Weelden told FOX40.
“Companies that have a nice return policy will get a lot of business, so we expect companies to honor those policies,” said Gary Almond, president of the Sacramento Better Business Bureau.
Technically, the company has honored its guarantee. The website states: “If for any reason you are not completely satisfied with your purchase, simply return it for a refund within 30 days.”
However, the policy goes on to say that “merchandise that has been special ordered, customized or custom made including class rings and engraved items cannot be returned or exchanged.”
“They told us we should get the ring soldered,” Van Weelden said.
In both cases, the two families say the sales person told them to make minor changes to the rings.
“Never once did they say you won’t be able to return it if I did that,” Van Weelden told FOX40.
Both he and Wong tell FOX40 that Samuels left out one big detail: “that any minor alterations would mean we can’t return it.” Van Weelden says.
FOX40 tried to reach out to Samuels corporate offices Friday but we did not hear back before publishing time.
