It’s breakfast time at the Pi Kappa Alpha fraternity at the University of the Pacific. This morning, it’s donated bagels near their new tent city made of cardboard boxes and plastic and tarps.
They’ve spent the night outside; their frat house locked up for 5 days — and they are doing this because they want to. With rain in forecast, that’s a very big commitment.
These 60 or so students must still go to class and work, but they are not allowed to take a shower unless someone sponsors them with a donation, or eat food other than what’s been donated.
All the money they raise goes to the Second Harvest Food Bank of San Joaquin County.
