Midtown Businesses Think Security, Safety after Recent Violence

With three incidents of violence in a little more than a week, midtown Sacramento businesses are thinking security and safety.

“We’re just trying to keep the bar the way it is,” said a security guard at the Mercantile Saloon. One of the newest additions to the bar – a metal detector.

The managers tell FOX40 the devices were purchased after the deadly shooting in Old Sacramento on New Year’s Eve but now, the manager tells us the staff is dealing with some new fears and realities. There have been several violent incidents recently in midtown- one where a man was beaten after leaving the Mercantile Saloon.

Now, the security is questioning everyone that walks in to the bar.

Despite what many may think, the Sacramento Police Department says statistics suggest the number of assaults in Midtown have gone done by 22 percent in the last four weeks. In fact, since this time last year, overall, crime statistics are up.
