Friends and those who didn’t even know them are leaving flowers and candles outside the home of Claudia Maupin and Oliver “Chip” Northrop.
Someone brutally killed the elderly couple inside their home Monday. Investigators have no suspects or persons of interest.
“We look at all options,” Davis police Lt. Paul Doroshov said.
Options including a recent rash of residential burglaries although with this break-in, it’s different.
“We don’t have anything that we know of that was stolen,” Doroshov said.
“Hopefully they’ll be able to get to the bottom of what happened. It’s just puzzling. Break into somebody’s house, kill them and not take anything. Wondering what the motivation could be,” neighbor Peter McBride said.
And the FBI is helping Davis cops figure out that motivation and who could be responsible for slaying Maupin and Northrop, a retired defense attorney. Could that perhaps have something to do with a motive?
“We’re not closing any books on anything. Really, we’re just working it and see where the evidence takes us,” Lt. Doroshov said. “We haven’t ruled anything out.”
If this is not a random crime, there’s a bit a relief for neighbors.
“I think that is a little comforting. But still, it’s a difficult thing,” neighbor Kalista Hickman added. “I hope that they figure out who did this quickly.”
