Stockton has a rich naval, maritime and shipping heritage.
Those industries, however, tend to leave behind an ecological mess when they pick up and leave town and Stockton is no exception. According to a new compilation of statistics from Cal EPA, three of the ten most polluted zip codes in the state are in the area.
The list was created comparing side by side percentiles of air, water and ground pollution and combing them with the human costs and statistics of a bad environment and poverty, like asthma and obesity, to come up with the rankings.
Coming in at number 3 on the statewide list of 1700-plus zip codes, the 95205. It’s bordered by the Calaveras River, West Lane and Highway 99.
Landing in the sixth spot, the 95206 area code, which includes the Port of Stockton and continues westward into the Delta.
Rounding out the most polluted Top 10, the 95203 zip code, which includes the area east of the Port of Stockton, including the Stockton waterfront and most of downtown.
In the future, Cal EPA hopes to get even more in-depth, with perhaps street by street levels of pollution and use that to give public health officials a better opportunity to get a jump start on potential problems.
