Speedway Officials Estimate Nearly 50K Pounds of Trash Collected from Indy500

INDIANAPOLIS (FOX59)-

The greatest spectacle in racing on Sunday has now turned into the greatest cleanup on Monday.

Approximately 200,000 people crammed into the Indianapolis Motor Speedway Sunday to watch the 97th running of the Indianapolis 500. The aftermath of those attending the race was the cleanup.

Piles of trash–from bottles to cans to broken grills–littered the grounds.

Churches, schools and other non-profit groups traded their day off on Monday to collect the trash, while earning cash for their organizations.

Speedway officials estimate that nearly 50,000 pounds of trash is collected from the race day crowd.
