A man suspected of attempting to kill a woman in her home was convicted today of attempted murder, domestic violence with great bodily injury, and criminal threats, the District Attorney announced Monday.
According to prosecutors, Richard Helton – a three-striker with prior convictions for burglary, sodomy and attempted rape – threatened to kill the victim in her home before attacking her. Helton then strangled the victim, who lost consciousness. The victim called police next morning.
After authorities arrived at her home, the victim was taken to the hospital. The list of injuries she sustained includes a gash at the top of her head, bruising around her eyes and lips, swelling and bruising on the side of her face, and burst blood vessels in the whites of her eyes, as well as around her neck and throat.
Helton’s sentencing is schedules for July 15 in Department 23 of the Sacramento Superior Court at 9 a.m.
