Deep-fried watermelon is now a thing that exists in real life, thanks to the new batch of concessions at the California State Fair, which opens Friday.
Tony Cardinali, of Cardinali Family Concessions, walked FOX40 through some new offerings for this year.
First, there’s the deep-fried watermelon, which is exactly what it sounds like. Cardinali says special batter was developed specifically for frying watermelon. It’s topped with strawberry syrup, powdered sugar and a cherry.
The next thing is also fried – deep-fried pineapple upside down cake. Cardinali told FOX40 that this treat has more of a crunch and stays cool on the inside.
Another offering is ice cream spaghetti, which, as Cardinali was quick to point out, doesn’t actually taste like spaghetti. Ice cream is pushed through a press, making long, spaghetti-like strands. It’s topped with pureed strawberry instead of marinara sauce and powdered white chocolate instead of Parmesan cheese.
Other offerings include the world’s hottest ice cream and world’s hottest chicken wings that are made with Ghost Pepper, and an authentic, wood-fired pizza.
