A former UC Davis punter will be heading to the NFL, the San Francisco 49ers announced Monday.
Colton Schmidt, a Bakersfield native who set school punting records last season, was signed to a 3-year deal with the 49ers.
Don’t expect to see Schmidt in a game anytime soon, however. Ahead of him in the depth chart is veteran Andy Lee, who led the league last year in net punting yardage and averaged over 48.1 yards a kick.
Schmidt averaged 44.5 yards a punt during his 2012 season with the Aggies. He went undrafted, but was signed as a free agent.
