Loss Prevention Officer Stabbed after Confronting Suspected Shoplifter

SACRAMENTO—

A suspected shoplifter who stabbed a loss prevention officer at a midtown Safeway led police on an hours-long manhunt Tuesday.

The incident started at the Safeway on 19th Street in Midtown Sacramento sometime before 5:30 p.m.

Sacramento Police told FOX40 that a loss prevention officer went to stop a man suspected of shoplifting, sparking an altercation between the officer and the suspect.

At some point during the altercation the officer was stabbed, police say. The suspect then took off running.

Police note that the loss prevention officer suffered non-life threatening injuries.

A little before 8:30 p.m., police announced that a Sacramento Police K-9 had taken down the suspect.

Apparently, the suspect had made his way into a midtown apartment a few blocks down from the stabbing and hunkered down — defecating in a closet, according to 25-year-old resident Randall Hahn.

The suspect, who has not been officially identified, is now in police custody.
