Laurence Daniels, the 66 year-old contractor who died with a BART worker while inspecting rail tracks, lived for twenty years in the Curragh Oaks neighborhood where he was a long-time member of the homeowner’s association.
Daniels moved out several years ago to work on a BART engineering contract but kept and rented his Fair Oaks home.
“It was a total shock,” said George Calderon, who lives across the street from Daniels’ house.
Daniels was the first to greet Calderon when he moved in in 1994. Other neighbors say he was a nice man and good neighbor. They also said he was very detail oriented in his work with the association. Daniels showed great enthusiasm for his rail engineering work, and some don’t see him being careless in his job.
“His work in the industry I believe had to do a lot to do with safety,” said Calderon.
Daniels’ wife Betty notified Calderon so that he could spread the bad news to neighbors. He is also survived by a grown daughter.
