Along Stockton’s Miracle Mile is a new business with a special flare.
The Mile Wine Company opened about three weeks ago and has the distinction of being owned by Paul Marsh, Stockton’s first certified sommelier.
So, what is a sommelier? Basically it’s a wine expert, but there are tests to pass; like the blind tasting.
“They put a glass in front of you and you’ve got four minutes to figure out what is it, where’s it from, how old is it, how it’s made, what kind of barrels, climate,” Marsh said.
Suffice it to say, Marsh passed and is putting that expertise to good use.
“This is my living room,” he said about the wine bar. “I want people to come in and experience a good time. I can’t wait to meet every person who comes in and unlock that next wine for them.”
There’s a lot to choose from; about 2,000 bottles and over 120 labels. Out of all of it Marsh does have a favorite, Tempranillo from Rioja which is in northern Spain. He also has a great description for it.
“Tempranillo is if cabernet sauvignon and pinor noir put on some Barry White,” Marsh said.
Along with being a place where you can find a variety of unique wines, the opening of the Mile Wine Company is a unique addition to Stockton’s economy and image.
“We’re here to shake things up a little bit,” said Marsh, who lives about a minute away from the Miracle Mile, “Stockton’s getting better and if I can help one glass of wine at a time I’m going to be here for that.”
