An officer-involved shooting closed part of Highway 12 Tuesday in Fairfield.

Police say officers responded to a report of a stabbing in an apartment on Pennsylvania Avenue earlier in the morning. Investigators say the man, holding a knife, ran off.

Officers chased the man until he lunged at them with the knife, police say. That’s when the man was shot, according to investigators.

Highway 12 was closed between Pennsylvania Avenue and Beck Avenue.

Police later announced that the suspect, identified as 24-year-old Deonte Traylor, had died from his wounds. He is noted to have been a recent parolee for a robbery conviction.

The woman who was stabbed suffered over 30 wounds, police say. She is in critical condition at a local trauma center.

Ian McDonald contributed to this report.
