A corrections officer California State Prison-Sacramento was attacked by an inmate with a makeshift weapon Monday morning, prison officials said.

Investigators say 22-year-old Alberto Cortez had slashed the officer, a 15-year veteran, in the neck. The officer is recovering in the hospital, and is said to be in fair condition.

Cortez has been in prison since Dec. 2010, serving time for attempted murder and receiving stolen property in Los Angeles County, according to the Department of Corrections.
