61-year-old Donnie Navidad is a faithful Raiders fan, but he never thought he would save someone’s life after a football game.
“There was a lady yelling up to the third level, ‘don’t do it, don’t do it,’” said Navidad. “There was a lady sitting there, her legs dangling and I even yelled up to her, ‘don’t do it.’”
The woman jumped 45 feet from a third level deck at the Oakland Coliseum after Sunday’s game.
Navidad sprang into action.
“I had my arms extended out to catch her and then lock her, so when we fell we fell together I would take the force with me and not her,” said Navidad
Instead, the woman’s body bounced off his arms and hit the ground. But, it was Navidad who broke her fall and saved her life.
“It was the right thing to do. Had I not done it, that would have been etched in my brain for the rest of my life,” he said.
A day later, Navidad has severe bruising on his arm and a sore hip.
While he does not consider himself a hero, the former Marine and Vietnam veteran believes he was there for a reason.
“When you react to something, you react without any hesitation at all. You just do what you gotta do,” said Navidad.
The woman is reportedly in critical condition.
Navidad has never met her before, but he hopes to visit her in the hospital.
