WATERFORD—

Authorities are asking for help in finding the vehicle that drove away from the scene of a deadly hit-and-run crash early Sunday morning.

Deputies from the Stanislaus County Sheriff’s Department showed up near E and Dorsey Streets in Waterford around 1:30 a.m. after getting a report about a fight, according to a media release from the department. Reports about a shooting also came from the same area, deputies say.

Getting to the scene, the deputies say they saw some people running from the area. Deputies were then led to a person who witnesses say had been hit by a car trying to get away from the area before authorities showed up.

That person was taken to Oak Valley Hospital but was soon pronounced dead.

Deputies later found a second person who had been hit by the same car, but that person is expected to survive. She has also been taken to Oak Valley Hospital.

Witnesses tell deputies that a dark-colored Nissan was the car that hit the two people. No further description of the car has been given.

Anyone with information about the incident is being asked to call the Stanislaus County Sheriff’s Department at (209) 525-7103.
