A vacant Land O’Lakes plant in Gustine caught fire Sunday morning, leading to the evacuation of about two dozen nearby homes.
Since the building had been abandoned since 2005, firefighters allowed the fire to burn but kept it from spreading. Heavy smoke from the fire meant 25 neighboring homes had to be evacuated. Those families have since been allowed back.
The fire was out by Sunday afternoon.
Fire investigators say there was no gas or electricity hooked up to the building, but it’s still too early to officially give a cause.
Officials say Sunday’s fire was one of the biggest in the city’s history.
