Hundreds Gather to Remember ‘Hero’ Who Saved Girlfriend’s Life

MARYSVILLE-

Hundreds of Marysville residents gathered at the Earle Yorton Little League field Sunday to remember 16-year-old Mateus Moore, a sophomore at Marysville Charter Academy who friends and family say saved his girlfriend’s life Friday.

His decision would cost him his own life.

“I’m proud of him. At the same time, I want my son back” Mateus’s father, Marcus, told FOX40. “He shoved her out of the way and saved her life.”

Mickayla Friend’s family told FOX40 Sunday that she is doing much better. Upon waking up from sedation, she told her family that she and Mateus chose to walk over the train tracks from the Sadie Hawkin’s Dance to get a snack at the Dollar Tree instead of the tunnel underneath, because it felt safer.

“The tunnel is dangerous at night. It’s dark,” she told her mother.

Both families are in the process of creating fundraisers. Union Pacific Railroad will be investigating this case.
