A Stockton woman claims she was targeted for a hate crime because of her hijab, or headscarf.
Speaking anonymously to FOX40, she says she was sought out in the Costco parking lot off of Hammer Lane.
“A white male pulled up next to me and he yelled, ‘Terrorist,’” the mother said. “I was like, What? Excuse me?’ He said, ‘Yeah, terrorist. Go to hell.’”
She says the man left to go inside and shop, while she tried to file a report with security.
“Right then, it made me really sad to hear my kids are having to grow up in an environment that is hostile,” the woman said.
Soon after, she told FOX40 it got even more hostile. The two then crossed paths again in the parking lot.
The woman claims the same man tried to run her over.
She says the man did not hit her, but came close. She filed a report with the Stockton Police Department and informed the Council of American Islamic Relations (CAIR) of what happened.
“We take all hate crimes seriously,” Stockton Police Officer Joe Silva said. He added that there were only two hate crimes reported in the City of Stockton last year.
“These things happen and no one says anything,” the woman said. Except this time.
This case is now in the hands of the San Joaquin County District Attorney.
