School let out for kindergartners at Toulumne Elementary School on Hernon Road at Noon Wednesday. As soon as it did, a horrific accident happened. 5-year-old Alex Navarro Fernandez got ahead of his mother and was hit by a slow-moving Modesto city bus.
Nancy Haverly lives right across the street from the accident scene. She says it was hard to believe and even worse, as the mother stood nearby.
“My husband tried to administer CPR, the mother was screaming, it was so sad to watch,” Haverly said.
Haverly says an accident was bound to happen, and that a crosswalk needs to be put in place directly across the street from the school.
Police were out on scene citing parents for jaywalking for a short time following the accident.
As night fell, a vigil was held for Alex. Students as young as 3-years-old helped lay out candles and flowers.
The school’s superintendent Pam Able released this statement: “We are heartbroken over this horrific accident. Our thoughts and prayers are with the family. Grief counselors are on site, and will continue to be on site, as long as they are needed.”
Investigators say drugs or alcohol did not play a role in the crash.
