Devon Minnema is a Dixon native, a sophomore in college, only 18 years old and ready to take on city politics in his hometown.
“I am dedicated to growing an even better Dixon. That’s the spirit in which I am proud to announce my candidacy for Dixon City Council,” Minnema said.
Minnema might only be 18 but his interest in politics stretches back several years. In 2009, at the age 13, he staged his own anti-tax protest. A year later, he organized a Tea Party demonstration. He believes his youth, energy and passion are assets for Dixon.
Dixon’s biggest problem in the eyes of Minnema is employment and the focus the city has paid in recent years to attracting large industry instead of growing small business.
“We need to have more local companies growing and expanding so people can have careers here without necessarily having to start or own their own business,” Minnema said.
Minnema’s competition are two incumbents, Dane Besneatte and Thom Bouge. Since there are no council districts in Dixon, the two candidates who receive the most votes will represent the city.
