Three years after cars were allowed to drive down K Street in Sacramento, traffic could be stopped again, temporarily.
For more than four decades, cars were kept off K Street between 8th and 12th Streets, instead encouraging pedestrian traffic. Then in November 2011, the road was opened back up to vehicles. At the time, the Downtown Sacramento Partnership said it was an effort to revitalize K Street.
Now, the City of Sacramento will be trying out temporary closures of K Street during hours when downtown venues are popular.
Police officers will be blocking K Street between 8th and 12th Streets Thursday through Saturday evenings, from 10 p.m. to 3 a.m. each night.
City officials say the temporary closures are meant to ease traffic congestion and provide a safe environment for people walking during times when thousands descend on a small area of downtown.
It appears the K Street closures will continue on weekend evenings.
