MAYSVILLE-

A Marysville man’s extensive collection of American military memorabilia has turned into a museum.

Dann Spear’s Museum of the Forgotten Warriors had been an idea of his since he was 10. Spear wrote letters to men and women in the armed forces. They wrote back, and sent along everything from patches to full uniforms.

“I started collecting and I wanted to keep their stories alive. It was something I always wanted to do because I was too young,” Spear said. “I didn’t serve, but I wanted them remembered.”

Spear’s museum now boasts items from the Revolutionary War to Afghanistan and Iraq.

“The personal tribute to each ones service is what this place is all about. You can see on the uniforms they were all written and signed for me. That tells where they were at. Who they served with and then a signature,” Spear told FOX40.

The role women play, and many of the challenges they overcame, in the military are also on display. It took the guts of women like Sandra Peterson of Modesto to break barriers in flying.

“She had the honor of the guys talking her into going up and flying. It was all unofficial. They could have gotten in trouble for it, but she was able to break through that barrier,” Spear said.

The museum is free. You can find it at 5865 A Road in Marysville. It’s open Thursdays and Saturday.
