PLACER COUNTY-

A hidden gem for rock climbers is back open near Auburn.

Rock climbers are again permitted to scale the cliffs of the Auburn Quarry under a special use permit.

The Climbing Resource Advocates for Greater Sacramento spent about 4 years regaining access to the area, which had been closed since 2003, but has now recently reopened.

“We were trying to find local climbing in the area,” said Lodi resident Max Porterhouse. “This showed up on the internet, so we showed up.”

CRAGS raised more than $9,000 through donations to fund access to the Auburn Quarry. Volunteers will maintain the area, which is working with the Auburn State Recreation Area to keep the site open.

“There is some stuff for beginners, but it’s kind of more advanced stuff,” Porterhouse, an intermediate climber, told FOX40. “If you climb a lot in the gym, it may be a bit more challenging.”

And for climbers in this area, you can’t beat the location.

“I like Tahoe and Yosemite, but for how close it is to Sacramento, it’s pretty good.”
