Three miles of waterfront property along the Sacramento River in West Sacramento may soon become an entertainment district.
“It’s the most obvious thing to everyone in the entire region. We have this tremendous asset. Why are we not using it?” Mayor of West Sacramento, Chris Cabaldon, told FOX40.
West Sacramento has already seen some new developments in recent years, including new residential buildings at Garden Universal Street. The city is working with developers to have a new entertainment venue open directly in front of the new construction by October of 2014.
“If they can make The Barn how it’s proposed, I think it has a lot of potential to be a great place,” West Sacramento resident Jeffrey Albrecht said.
The Barn, is proposed as an 8,025 square foot informal event structure. Mayor Cabaldon told FOX40 it will host both indoor and outdoor events, have space for coffee vendors, food, art and possibly a beer garden. The West Sacramento City Council has already approved the plan, and developers are currently waiting on conditional use permits.
“It sounds like a great idea. Sounds like it could be a hotspot for Sacramento,” LoQin Romano said.
Just south of the proposed site for The Barn, West Sacramento is proposing the Pioneer Bluff Transition Plan. This project is more of a long-term plan to make Pioneer Bluff less industrial and more of an urban growth area. Doing so would require relocating several long standing industrial businesses, including a petroleum tank farm.
“The industrial businesses have not all decided to move yet. But I think that will change, when they start to see 5,000 people driving by their business every day. When they see schools and restaurants developing,” Mayor Cabaldon said.
Cabaldon said the petroleum tank farm could move to a reserved location at the Port of Sacramento. This would open up space at Pioneer Bluff for other businesses.
“Along the West Sacramento waterfront, for 3 miles, we have great development opportunities,” Cabaldon said.
Even farther south, there is another proposed entertainment zone at Stone Lock.
