A Hughson man is in the San Joaquin County jail, facing multiple charges related to a Wednesday afternoon attempted rape at a popular recreation area in Ripon.
According to Ripon Police, some young adults were in the parking lot of the Bike Bridge river access, getting ready to walk to the river for a day of fun when 34-year-old Jose Vasquez Sanchez approached them and demanded sex from one of the women in the group.
The young adults ran away into a nearby neighborhood on Reynold’s drive where Sanchez, brandishing a sawed off shotgun, caught up with the female victim and physically assaulted her, police said.
Another female ran to a neighbor’s home and called 911 while the men in the group, believing the suspect’s gun wasn’t loaded, overpowered him and held him until police arrived within a few minutes.
“They stepped up,” said Ripon Police Sergeant Steve Meece. “And we’re happy to say they stepped up.”
Sanchez was booked into the San Joaquin County Jail on several charges including attempted rape by force, assault with a deadly weapon, false imprisonment, and sexual assault.
Police suspect he was under the influence of drugs at the time of the attack.
